An Apology to Daryl Kramp, MP - Prince Edward-Hastings

Author: Gregory Thomas 2013/06/26

It recently came to our attention that a story about Daryl Kramp, Conservative MP for Prince Edward-Hastings, appeared in the Community Press of Trenton Ontario on February 9th, 2012. The story contained incorrect information about Mr. Kramp’s parliamentary pension entitlement.

The story Go ahead, review my pension: MP Kramp by W. Brice McVicar, puts Mr. Kramp’s pension entitlement at $83,796 per year if he were to leave office after the federal election in 2015, and $102,916 per year if he were to leave office after the 2019 election. The story relied on information contained in a report on MP pensions published by the Canadian Taxpayers Federation.

Upon reviewing our research, we discovered that we erroneously added five extra years of service, at current salary levels, when we calculated Mr. Kramp’s pension entitlement. As a result, we overstated his pension entitlement, in the first case by 39 per cent, and in the second case by 28 per cent.

His actual annual parliamentary pension entitlement would be $60,301 if he were to leave office in 2015 and $80,242 if he were to leave office in 2019.

We have corrected our MP Pension report and we have issued a formal apology to Mr. Kramp.

We apologize as well to the Community Press, to Mr. Brice McVicar and to readers who were misinformed as a result of the error in our report.

We realize that we published the erroneous information about Mr. Kramp in January 2012 and we are sorry that it took us this long to discover the error and to apologize. This error is solely ours - it is solely our responsibility to ensure that our reports are accurate and that we correct them as soon as we discover a mistake.

We regret any misunderstanding resulting from our error.
